La politica tributaria messa in atto da Giulio Agricola negli anni del suo governatorato provinciale in Britannia, sarebbe stata caratterizzata, secondo quanto scriveva Tacito, da criteri di aequitas e humanitas nei riguardi dei provinciali. Una lettura più attenta del testo dell’Agricola e, in particolar modo, il confronto con altre fonti (segnatamente Cicerone), induce tuttavia a considerare con maggior cautela le affermazioni del grande storico.

The tax policy put in place by Iulius Agricola during the years of his governorship in the province of Britannia would have been characterized, according to Tacitus, by criteria of aequitas and humanitas towards the provincials. A more careful reading of the text of the Agricola and the comparison with other sources (like Cicero) leads us to consider the statements of the great historian with greater caution
