The military presence in the hillforts of the border between Galician and maritime Asturian: Texts and context
The peculiarities of the Roman implantation in the Spanish North-West, especially in its maritime stretch, have given rise to the most varied readings of this process. However, all the authors agree to grant a relevant role to the army as an indispensable agent in the events that would violently and irreversibly modify the way of life of the indigenous communities that maintained the hillfort for centuries as a key reference of their identity.
The excavation of the fortified settlements around the Navia river, border between Lugo and Asturian conventus, rich in gold deposits, has added relevant evidences of instrumental and epigraphic order to verify this presence and argue the work of the roman army during the first century. A period in which, under military tutelage, were consolidated the new power structures and the local elites that captained them.
